Beatles memorabilia and collectors' items have only increased in value over the years as certain items become harder and harder to find as time goes on.

Ever since Beatle Mania began in the '60s the Beatles were cemented in pop music culture and history. Along with the music, stories of the band's performance on The Ed Sullivan Show or their landing in New York for their first American concerts have been passed on to later generations, leaving fans young and old longing for the nostalgia that comes with owning a piece of Beatles history. Few groups or musical acts have maintained their fame and popularity in such a way as the Beatles have since their break-up in the 1970s.

From board games to records to autographs, you can be assured that somebody owns it and for the right price, it can sit on the shelf with your very own stockpile of Beatles collectibles.

Records seem to be the most common and most sought after of the Beatles memorabilia. Recently in London, a mint condition White Album was sold for 20,000 pounds, or almost $35,000 in American dollars. As with any other band, the better the condition of the record, the higher the price. While perfectly kept and less common albums can sell for thousands, an album showing its use sells for much, much less.

Another deeply desired item of Beatles memorabilia are autographs. Fans have an insatiable want for anything touched by John, Paul, George, and Ringo, causing some autographed pictures to sell for thousands of dollars on sites like EBay. Experts like Frank Ciazaao and Gary Hein have spent decades studying the handwriting of the four members and suggest you check with them before spending big money on an autograph.

Besides the traditional memorabilia of records and autographs, there are dozens more items sold, traded, and passed along by Beatles collectors. Remco dolls, brushes, lunchboxes, buttons, board games, calendars, and t-shirts are just some of the licensed Beatle merchandise. While under Capitol Records, the Beatles agreed to have their faces plastered all over the world. In the midst of Beatle Mania, it wasn't uncommon to wake up to your Beatles alarm clock, throw on your Beatles t-shirt, put on your Beatles watch, pack your Beatles lunchbox, go home and play your Beatles board game with the family, and go to bed resting your head on your Beatles pillow and curled up under your Beatles comforter. The massive amount of Beatles collectable items has caused a need for stores to be available to sell or barter memorabilia.

One such store is From Me to You in Liverpool, England. They sell all licensed memorabilia and guarantee that all items are official Beatles, Apple, or Yellow Submarine merchandise. Not only that, but they offer a "Beatles Map" taking you on a tour of Liverpool as the Beatles saw it. Fab Four Collectibles has a showroom in New York City and requires an appointment to see the memorabilia they have.

Conventions are another popular place to purchase Beatles memorabilia. BEATexpo is an annual Beatles convention held in the United States. This day long convention features Beatles music, videos, and of course, lots and lots of vendors selling their own Beatles items. Always be on the safe side, though, and check your merchandise with a reputable vendor before making that big and finalized purchase.

Over their decade of immense popularity, the Beatles posed for and sold thousands of posters to be plastered on the walls of their frames. Over the years of their fame, pictures taken of the Beatles reflect their changes, as well as the changes of the world at the time. Along with the Beatles, the world seemed to shift into a psychedelic phase and the shift was mirrored in the change from the clean cut boys in suits with bowl cuts to the shaggier, peace loving later Beatles.

One of the most famous posters of the Beatles is the Abbey Rd poster. In it, the four Beatles are walking together one behind another on the cross walk of Abbey Road, just outside the recording studio where they recorded the majority of their music. Many hidden meanings have tried to be deciphered from the poster. One common one is that the Beatles are walking away from the studio, that they are walking away from their past. Another common thought is that the four men are dressed for a funeral. George is the gravedigger, Ringo is the pall bearer, John is the priest, and Paul is the dead one. Going along with the theory is the car with the license plate 28if. Paul would have been 28 'if' he hadn't died. The Beatles have never offered any explanation for the poster.

Another popular poster is the cover of the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club album, which was turned into a poster shortly after the album's release. It perpetuated the rumor circulating at the time that Paul McCartney had actually died in 1966 in a vicious car accident. Some symbols seem a little more obvious, while others ideas are more of a stretch. For instance, all the people are staring at a fresh grave. An idea that takes more of a stretch comes from the words "lonely hearts". A mirror placed against the drum flips the words and it reads 1 ONE 1 X HE DIE. The 1 one 1 symbolize the three remaining Beatles and the X crosses out Paul. Between the words He and Die is an arrow pointing at Paul. Seem suspicious? The rumors have been around for decades and have been continuously denied by all members of the band.

Another Beatles poster that has caused controversy is the cover of Help!, another album cover that became a popular poster. Much has been made of the positioning of the arms of John, Paul, George, and Ringo. In the unspoken language of semaphore, fans have flipped, rearranged, and mirrored the positions of all four band mates. The best that they could come up is the letters LPUS or "help us" when said aloud. The photographer of the photo, Robert Freeman, says "...I had the idea of semaphore spelling out the letters HELP. But when we came to do the shot the arrangement of the arms with those letters didn't look good. So we decided to improvise and ended up with the best graphic positions the band would be crying out for help.

Let it Be was released in May 1970 as a box set in over a dozen countries, including Britain, the United States, Germany, and Japan. The included book Get Back was 160 pages with hundreds of photos printed on glossy paper. This book became the most sought after piece of the box set and even today can sell for as much as $600.

In 1973, two box sets were released without the permission of the Beatles or Capitol Records. Alpha Omega I & II: The Story of the Beatles was sold by mail in the Midwestern United States. To counteract these sales, Capitol Records released The Beatles 1962-1966 followed by The Beatles 1967-1970. Later on George Harrison retained an attorney and on behalf of him, the Beatles, and Capitol Records filed a fifteen million dollar lawsuit against the company behind the fraud and American Broadcasting Company for advertising the music.

The Beatles Collection was released in November 1978 in the UK and in December 1978 in the United States. Included along with the official catalogue was a compilation called Rarities. Rarities was the singles that until then had not been included on their LPs. Included in the blue cardboard box was thirteen discs and a poster of the boys. Only 3000 were released in America and the suggested price was $132.98. Because of the small number of reproductions, the American box set sold out almost immediately. Japan issued The Beatles Collection as well. It included extra inserts, lyrics, and more posters.

In Christmas of 1981, The Complete Works of The Beatles was released. It contained an unheard of eighty LPs by both the band and individual members. It was released in Germany, British, and American editions. It came on a two shelf stand made out of wood. It sold for about $885 dollars. It was updated in 1982 to include Reel Music and Paul McCartney's Tug of War.

In 1988, The Beatles Box Set was released. It was released on choice of CD, vinyl, or cassette. It contained digitally mastered mixes released for the first time on CD in 1987. Mark Lewisohn wrote the accompanying book detailing every single track on the collection. The set was encased in a black oak roll top box.

In September of 2009, Stereo Box Set was released with digitally remastered versions and new issues of individual albums. It was the stereo debut of the first four albums on CD. The album quickly reached the top of the Billboard charts and stayed there for several weeks, showing that decades after their split, the Beatles staying power has made them a force in the music industry that will continually be one to be reckoned with.

John Lennon formed his first band, The Quarry Men, in 1957. The band specialized in folk, jazz, and blues music. A 15 year old left-handed guitar player named Paul McCartney auditioned for the band and was immediately accepted in. As the band began to move into a more rock and roll direction, McCartney introduced George Harrison into the band. When the band broke up in 1959 over personality conflicts and not achieving the fame that they had hoped for, George, Paul, and John performed gigs as Johnny and the Moondogs, a bluesy, rock and roll mix band.

By 1960, the three played with drummer Pete Best and friend of Lennon bass player Stu Sutcliffe. They tried out several names including Long John and the Beatles, the Silver Beetles, the Beat Brothers, and finally The Beatles. The group toured Scotland and Hamburg, Germany and grew in popularity on the club circuit. Suitcliffe eventually left to follow other interests and Best was asked to leave after not getting along with other members. In his place came Ringo Starr, suggested by the bands manager, George Martin in 1962.

The band released their first single "Love Me Do" in 1962. Two years later, the song would be released and become a number one hit in the United States. The next song "She Loves You" was ridiculed on American Bandstand as viewers mocked the act's "mop top haircuts". The British release of the second album, With The Beatles sold a million copies in the UK and inspired Vee Jay Records to buy rights to Please Please Me, the band's first album, and rereleased it with the new title Introducing... The Beatles. Beatle Mania was just around the corner.

In February of 1964, the Beatles performed on The Ed Sullivan Show and were watched by approximately 73 million people. Several months later, Capitol Records signed The Beatles to a US deal. By April, The Beatles filled the top five spots on the Billboard Hot 100. In August 1965, they performed in New York's Shea Stadium to fifty-five thousand fans. That same year, the movie Help! was released and the soundtrack was one of four albums that the Beatles released and went to number one that year.

Legend has it that in August of 1964, the Beatles smoked marijuana for the first time with Bob Dylan. Bob Dylan supposedly mistook their lyrics of "I get by" for "I get high" and assumed that The Beatles had smoked all along. Shortly after that, they were introduced to psychedelics. Revolver and Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club, their next two albums show the influence of drugs.

In the summer of 1966, Beatles backlash began. John Lennon mentioned in an interview that "Christianity was dying" and that "The Beatles are more popular than Jesus now." Former fans began immediately burning records and holding protests. That August, the band made their last public performance in San Francisco. They decided to focus their time on meditating, writing, and recording. They created their own record company, Apple Records, and released The White Album in November 1968.

The band began disagreeing on the direction in which to take the music while recording the white Album. In September of 1969, Lennon quit the band. He was urged not to go public until the band's final album Let it Be was released. The band officially announced their split in April 1970 and legal documents filed December 31 of that year officially ended the Beatles.

It's a common misconception that since the Beatles were so popular all of their music must be well known and all of their records are readily available. However, that's an easy mistake to make and far from the truth. In the midst of Beatle Mania, records often sold out within days of hitting the shelves. Therefore, several printings of each record had to be made in order for the customers' need to be satisfied. With only a quick glance or limited knowledge, many different printings look similar to the print before and after it. A trained eye, however, can spot differences a mile away and those differences are what distinguish a common record from a rare Beatles record that can be worth hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

The White Album has caused quite a bit of controversy over the years with its rarity. At the time of printing, Capitol Records printed serial numbers on their albums. Collectors put great emphasis on having the lowest possible serial number and the lower the number, the higher the value of the record. For years, collectors have tried to figure out who has A0000001, the very first printing of The White Album. In the book Anthology, Paul McCartney is quoted as saying "John, I think, got the first one. He shouted loudest!" Years later, Ringo Starr would say "I got number one-because I'm lovely... I got number one here and number four in America." As of today, there have been around 25 reported copies of The White Album serial number A0000001. An anonymous employee at the printing company contracted to print the cover has claimed to have printed twelve covers with the same serial number as a present for his friends and family. While no one knows the exact number of albums with the supposed first serial number, to own a White Album with a serial number under A0000500 is to own several thousand dollars.

Arguably the rarest Beatles album is "Paul's Christmas Album". According to urban legend, Paul McCartney recorded this album as a Christmas present for his fellow band members. Only four copies were pressed, one for Paul, John, George, and Ringo. One copy most likely burned when Ringo's house in L.A. caught fire, ruining the majority of his Beatles collection. Supposedly John Lennon's copy was stolen while Westwood One went through his collection to put together the Lost Lennon Tapes Series. As for the other two copies, it is unsure who has possession of them at this moment.

Rare Beatles albums are often on display at Beatles conventions like BeatFest, sold online or in Beatles memorabilia stores, or if you are very lucky, you may be able to find one searching through the bins at your local music store. Wherever you find a rare Beatles album, however, it is important that you go to a reputable source to have it verified as a legitimate piece of Beatles merchandise. Otherwise, you may spend up to thousands of dollars on nothing more than fake vinyl and forged pictures.
